Resolved, Everything is political

On September 12, 2023, in our Fall 2023 Freshers Debate, the Union debated whether all aspects of life have a political history or implication attached to them.

A critical argument in favor of the resolution included the unconscious biases that inform the decisions we make, whether they involve political action or ordinary life. Given that our decisions always exist in the context of the political history of the country we live in, it is thus plausible to assume that all of our decisions carry with them, however little, the effects of our country’s political history.

A critical argument in opposition to the resolution included that of occurrences beyond human action and perception. It is difficult to argue that a supernova somewhere in the universe, which we have no idea has occurred, carries with it any political implications. Thus, narrowed down to an earthly context, there exist occurrences beyond human control that similarly do not carry a political context.

In a nearly even vote, the plurality of the Union voted against the resolution, and thus it failed to carry.
